Matt's live in London: Let the Games begin!

TODAY's Matt Lauer is surprised when the people he's casually chatting with in London's Olympic Park reveal they are all members of the Olympic diving team.

The Olympic torch has arrived in London, and so has Matt. Monday marked TODAY's first live broadcast from the Olympic park … emphasis on live.

NBC's Bob Costas speaks with TODAY's Matt Lauer about security measures being taken to secure the safety of fans and athletes at the Summer Games in London.

There were a few surprises this morning: Bob Costas almost missed his interview ("They called me 32 minutes ago!" he shouted. "You sound like Don Rickles," teased Matt.). Then, a group of U.S. athletes just wandered onto the set, more or less, for an impromptu chat ("What are you doing here?" Matt asked a seemingly random group of Americans, who replied that they were the diving team).

But at least the weather is going smoothly -- it's been sunny in London for the first time in weeks. The full TODAY crew will join Matt on Wednesday before Friday’s opening ceremonies.

whoa, I thought Ann Curry was going to be given the "plum" assignments like the Olympics--looks like, sounds like, she got more lemons.

The last Olympics were horribly covered by NBC. No respect for the games or the athletes. The anchors couldn't be bothered with dressing , hair, etc. They spent more time talking about themselves being there than covering the athletes. Cut to the snot in Atlanta whos comment on taking silver was, if you aren't the winner, you are a loser. I just won't watch NBC do this again. Matt Lauer and company can go fry.

I will repeat my comment from 4/8 years ago. NBC and especially Bob Costas sound jingoistic in their coverage of the games. Everything was so US oriented, you forgot that there are 200 other countries participating.

I worked as a volunteer at the 84 games in LA and the multi-cultural/country aspects of the games was/is wonderful. I know that it is important to cover Americans, but full coverage should also focus on the efforts of all of the athletes not just US stars.

An interesting story on an african archery participant (if there is one) or a Pacific islander's efforts and some countries struggles just to pull together a team and get them and their equipment to London would be very interesting

I certainly hope that NBC shows more than just US exploits and covers other countries athletes as well as ours.

It is after all an International celebration of sport

and BTW where is Ann Curry in the promos for the games. don't do her anymore bad!!!

Not watching NBC's coverage without Ann Curry. I'll watch the BBC streaming or any of the sport channels before I waste time watching Lauer.
