First lady: Leading US in Opening Ceremony will be 'humbling'

First lady Michelle Obama is hosting an Olympic version of her "Let's Move" campaign and tells TODAY's Al Roker that attending the Games is a proud moment for her after growing in a neighborhood where sports brought the community together

The Opening Ceremony of the Olympics is just hours away, and Michelle Obama is in London not just to enjoy the festivities, but also lend them her star power in the hope that the Games will inspire kids to become involved in sports. TODAY’s Al Roker caught up with the first lady at the Winfield House, the U.S. Ambassador’s home in London, where she hosted an event for Let's Move!.

“This is a lot of fun,” she said. “We invited U.S. military families here as well as kids from the U.K. who normally wouldn't have access to the Olympic Games. The U.S. Ambassador opened up his yard and we've had games, we've had David Beckham out here, had a number of the U.S. athletes, the current and former Olympians here, and we've just been playing on the lawn."

The first lady’s Let’s Move! initiative is dedicated to tackling the problem of childhood obesity so children will grow up happier, healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

The event hosted 1,500 kids who spent the afternoon at a plethora of activities and sports stations, which included a round of tennis with the United States Tennis Association and soccer with English team Manchester United. A marching band and DJ kept everybody going. Athletes in attendance included not only soccer superstar Beckham, but also such Olympic medalists as gymnast Dominique Dawes, Paralympic javelin thrower Gabriel Diaz de Leon, and soccer player Brandi Chastain.

The first lady has been a fan of the Olympics for a lifetime. “I don't think I'm different from any other kid in the country growing up,” she said. “The Olympics was it.” She said that she grew up watching sports, especially with her father, whose own athletic activities were curtailed by multiple sclerosis.

“Sports and the ability to watch sports was really all he had, so it meant a lot to the family,” the first lady told Roker. “Now being able to meet some of these Paralympians who are doing so much, and pushing through, and being inspiring to other kids of all abilities, is truly an amazing thing to see.”

Tonight the first lady will lead the U.S. delegation in the Opening Ceremony. “It will be awe-inspiring for me. It will be humbling,” she said. “I've never been to an Olympics before, and to go from never attending an Olympics to heading the U.S. delegation will be a proud moment for me personally. And I know it's going to be exciting for everyone.”

Once the Games begin, Mrs. Obama is hoping to see some tennis and swimming and possibly a little basketball; her husband is a known hoops fan. Since his duties as Commander in Chief will preclude his attending the Games, “He is so jealous of me right now,” she said.

Roker asked the first lady to weigh in on the match-up that has become the talk of the games. Who will do better in swimming: Michael Phelps or Ryan Lochte?

“Oh, my goodness,” she exclaimed. “No way. I'm not going for that. Go Team USA!”

I am a big fan of Michelle and support her using the Olympics as a way to motivate kids to be more active. However-it does seem odd that an athlete or coach is not leading the team.

Entirely inappropriate for her to lead the US delegation. She is not an athlete, nor is she a coach. This is all ego boosting for her. Doesn't benefit the athletes or the US. If she wants to be present at the games, fine, that is a good use of her role as First Lady. But let the athletes shine, this is their moment, not hers.

She says it will be awe-inspiring... yeah... right...

to see some FAKE 1st lady at the olympics instead of seeing her at the prision visiting her husband after being locked up for TREASON against this country... BOOOOO

@Noncritic @Cathy_774455 The tradition which has been followed by even the most virulent of dictators is that the Olympians choose one of their own.

By the Obamas choosing their selves, they are saying the Olympics are about THEM and not ABOUT the ATHLETES! AND THAT IS A DISGRACE!

She is the FIRST LADY! She is NOT a ATHLETE, let alone a OLYMPIAN! BTW @NONCRITIC that is MY PROBLEM with 'her' making the OLYMPICS about her instead of about all the ATHLETES who EARNED their PLACES to BE THERE!

Even IMELDA MARCOS, & EVITA PEREZ weren't so STUPID and DISGRACEFUL to pull THIS CRAP!

@Willowbrook And never mind all the #BLACK# athletes who lost their chance to lead their team in the Opening ceremonies!

What the Obamas have done here is a DISGRACE! I hope that after the Olympics, when the Olympians are being punished for their success; they 'remember' the 'regard' in which they were held by the POTUS & the first lady.

@Cathy_774455 sorry but I don't think YOU are aware of the long road the Athletes traveled to EARN their way to the OLYMPICS. And NOW instead of having one of the Athletes lead the other Athletes into the stadium as is THEIR RIGHT, you have the 'first lady'.

And before you 'scream racist' as you are known to do while personally attacking the "republicans" as did in previous posts; many of the Athletes are TRULY BLACK and not MULATTO. And Michelle TOOK THEIR PLACE, as if the ATHLETES had a CHOICE. They were probably threatened with a ONE WAY TICKET HOME (and possibly threatened with being BANNED from the Olympics) if they dared REFUSE!

And speaking of RACISM; where is your OUTRAGE that the black Designer KOTO (who ALSO 'won' the right for HER design for her DESIGNS to be in the opening ceremonies) was booted out ... so that Obama Donor Ralph Lauren (WHITE) could have his made in china CRAP be there instead?

So much for your hypocritical, racist rants and personal attacks!

Not even a 'nice' try at personal attacks of FAUX RACISM on YOUR PART!

@RobertSims56 you say not ONE of the athletes had a 'problem' with this? Can you prove that?

Of course you can't all you can do is 'say' they didn't have a problem with it as though YOU were there. Of course YOU were not there. So YOU don't know.

IF any of the Athletes had complained they would have been thrown out with the Garbage the way Obama did to the Dali Lama when HE visited.

So much for 'your' biased input.

You were the one who falsely accused everyone else who didn't agree with you of being RACIST, with your nonsensical and UNEDUCATED RANT about how people who YOU deem to be MINORITIES were NOT allowed to compete when in fact many of those groups had been 'competing' all along.

You were the one Robert 'dear' who told everyone who didn't agree with you to 'shut their traps'.

In truth Robert, you sound like you're six. And with your incessant lies, and falsely accusing others of being racist; you sound like you're using your parents' computer without permission.

Tonight the first lady will lead the U.S. delegation in the Opening Ceremony.

Since WHEN has politics been allowed to become a part of the Olympics ?

Wow, the Obamas will do anything to get attention.

Whoever allowed her to "lead the U.S. Olympians" should be kicked off the U.S. roster.

How much is Mrs. Obama's, and her friends and ESCORTS, trip going to cost the taxpayers ?

Well she didn't do the leading....must have read this thread and re-thought this. But, it is more likely it became a security issue. Either way, I'm glad she didn't walk. As you could see, no one else had any "ringers" in their groups, as it should be. The politicos were in the stands, supporting their athletes, not shifting the attention from the athletes.

The point is allowing politics to denigrate a tradition of peace and athletic competition about 3000 years old. This provides us a glimpse of healthy international cooperation and competition and it only comes along every four years. I had the honor of working on the crisis response team at the Lake Placid games and will never forget the experience. I happen to like Ms. Obama but whether or nor I think she should be leading the delegation is totally irrelevant and unimportant in the greater scheme of things. My first thought when I saw that Michelle Obama would be leading the U. S. delegation was, "How convenient that she is the wife of a president running for re-election." This is an outrageously political move that presents an awkward moment for the athletes and coaches. If it were me, I would feel somewhat used. Although the games have been afflicted with political contexts through the years, this is the first time a blatantly political presence has been presented as part of the team itself. This is wrong, wrong, wrong.

And before you spring the RACIST CARD (which YOURS is denied by the way from OVERUSE) I support the BLACK DESIGNER who WON the right (through her beautiful designs) to have HER designs be the uniforms for the Olympic team. I do NOT support the WHITE DESIGNER who 'happened' to be a Major Obama DONOR who gets to have his MADE IN CHINA CRAP shown instead of KOTO'S designs.

Either way, it doesn't matter. Because no where in the history of the Olympics has a Politician (in or out of office) led the Olympians into the stadium. Even the most extreme of dictators, did that (disproving your 'lies' and 'aSSumptions'.)

But actual FACTS do not matter to YOU, does it?

Speaking of facts. The problem is Michelle Obama is NO ATHLETE. SHE didn't compete for her RIGHT to lead the Olympians into the STADIUM. She was HANDED that right, and the ATHLETES were 'told' of the decision. They weren't given a chance to VOTE (as IS TRADITION). They were told the 1st lady, a woman who has never been in training for the Olympics would be leading them in.

@debrarae you need to take a chill pill. Bust arteries much? And that saying is getting old real quick like. You claim that others don't have their facts, but do you? Where you there when they (asked or told) the athletes the so called decision? I don't think someone with your hot temper would be allowed to set foot in the room with them. That and other comments you have made in here lead me to believe your a hot head and you talk out your ares.

        LEAD...means support

Other first ladies who have led recent U.S. Olympic delegations include Hillary Clinton at Lillehammer in 1994 and Laura Bush at Turin in 2006.

You crazy NAY SAYERS can't understand the simplest statements.

She is LEADING the US DELEGATION to support the Olympians...just like other First Ladies Did.

It is not right for anyone but an athlete or coach to lead in the team. BAD decision to break tradition. I wonder if she will also break tradition and lower the flag when she passes the Queen. I hope not but if she is willing to break tradition my taking the spot from someone who is more deserving like an athlete or coach then my bets are that she would lower the flag. Shame on the Olmpic committe for allowing this.

I've never seen an Olympic opening or closing ceremony where the US team was led by anyone but an athlete or a coach. The honor of carrying the flag belongs to a participant, not a politician. This is not a holiday parade where a celebrity "grand marshal" rides in the car up front. This is the Olympics! She's doing great, inspirational work with her "Let's Move" program, but she certainly doesn't deserve to be included in this group, let alone lead them. It's disappointing.

What has she done for the country, except have parties for little kids at the White House. No offense of the little kids. But our country is in deire straits.!!!!

Don't count on it, Maxx. First, she was never proud of America until her husband was nominated for a run at the white house. Her first trip to London proved to be a big embarrassment to the USA when she touched the Queen inappropriately. When has she ever said anything that wasn't an embarrassment to the USA? I surely hate to see her taking this freebie trip on the backs of the American people, just to cause or create another embarrassing moment for the USA. We all know she has nothing to give to any situation, but apparently she has no shame!

I am surprised they (the obummers) are going to let the American flag be carried in this year's olympics, since they have denigrated it throughout the white house and don't really think it stands for what it has always stood for, Honor and Freedom.

BTW the HYPOCRISY here is by the LEFTISTS who are screaming RACIST when they BUMPED the ATHLETES (Black, white, Hispanic, etc...) so they could take the SPOTLIGHT for their selves like the SELF ABSORBED JERKS they are!

BTW 'dearie' where was YOUR OUTRAGE when the BLACK DESIGNER who #WON# the design challenge to have HER DESIGNS be the UNIFORMS for the 2012 summer OLYMPICS was BUMPED ...so a WHITE GUY (who was a BIG OBAMA DONOR) could have his MADE IN CHINA GARBAGE be the CRAP the Olympians were forced to wear?

The RIGHTWINGERS aren't the RACIST & HYPOCRITES HERE. The LIBERALS ARE! And that is why the LIBERAL, MARXIST LOONS will lose the POTUS, the CONGRESS, the SENATE & all levels of Government for the next 20 years.

@ debrarae you are wrong that Mitt is not there on our dime. He has been receiving Secret Service protection since Feb. 2012. To quote The Washington Post : "In anticipation of another busy campaign cycle, the Secret Service has requested $113.4 million to protect the eventual 2012 Republican nominee — a $4 million increase from the 2008 campaign and about two-thirds more than was spent for security during the 2004 election."

Btw I failed to mention that during the 2008 campaign the Secret Service was protecting McCain, Palin, Obama and Biden four people.

Anyone with anything between their ears and knows something about the Olympics knows that this is a travesty; just like the Nobel Prize BS was a travesty. If they can't understand this, they are dumber than a bag of hammers. The Olympics is about athletes NOT about politics, photo-ops, or first ladies of any party. We have living Olympians that have won gold as far back as the 1928 Olympics, and athletes that broke records, racial barriers, or surmounted tremendous odds. THEY deserve to lead the US delagation not teh FLOTUS. This is just another example of the kind of behavior in this administration that makes people want to vomit. Maybe we should allow the FLOTUS of Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Somalia, and all the other countries lead THEIR delagations and just morph the Olympics into another propaganda event. It's bad enough that the IOC has already prostituted the Games in a business instead of what it was meant to be. In addition there goes a couple of million more in providing security for her alone while she strolls into the stadium. It's bad enough the Brits have to worry about Al Qaida blowing stuff up. NOW they have to worry about giving them a some motivation to blow something up. Enough said.

This is ridiculous - how about appointing the athlete from Aurora Colorado to lead the delegation?

These athletes and their families sacrifice SO much more than any of us could imagine - THEY should be the focus of these games. but instead, tonight when I watch the opening ceremonies - I'm going to see the long loving camera shot from an NBC camera on an Obama - that is plain SICK!

Its obvious you can think on your own, but have you considered why mit and his wife are in London? Yes they have a horse that has a shot at winning something. I think mit is over there brokering deals for one of his companies to produce 2016 Olympic apparel (outsourcing) to be sold here in the states. What about that? Why don't we inform and educate people about the fact that most of the Ralph Lauren designed apparel for this years Olympics were made in China. I personally have a problem with that, more so than I do about the First Lady leading the US delegation during the opening cerimonies. You are as blind and dumb as the teabaggers who think mit will be the next president. Stop bitching about the things YOU have no control over and doesn't benefit the American people. You really want to moan and groan about something, let it be about creating jobs here in this country where they're needed. If you can't talk about something that can possibly benefit out of work Americans, shut the hell up and enjoy the Olympic games.

Mariel Zagunis To Lead U.S. Team In 2012OlympicsOpening Ceremony ... Mariel Zagunis will carry the U.S. flag during the Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremonies, officials confirm to news. Mariel Zagunis, a two time gold winner for fencing, was bestowed the honor this week.

It was no easy thing for Zagunis to earn her spot at the front of the 530-member U.S. team – 269 women and 261 men. First, she made it as a finalist and then prevailed in five rounds of voting by team captains. After four rounds, Zagunis and another unidentified athlete were tied.

"To get that final vote, someone had to change their mind, and they changed their mind in my favor," she said. "For the decision to be for me, in my favor, it means a lot to me. I can't believe it's going to be me."
